If you’re planning the estate through an attorney, the process generally takes between 2 to 6 weeks. If you’re handling the estate planning process on your own, it can take a shorter or longer period of time but you’re likely to face more obstacles this way.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to update your estate plan every 3 to 5 years. For more sophisticated plans, we recommend having an annual review.

The cost will depend on the proposed plan. We quote flat fees from the plans we propose. Obviously, the more complex and higher net-worth cases often require advanced trust structures with higher fees.

The most common documents included in a foundational estate plan include:

  • Revocable Living Trust
  • Will
  • Power of Attorney
  • Healthcare Directive

Estate Tax is a type of tax that is put on the transfer of wealth from the person who has passed away to the designated beneficiaries. This tax is paid by the person passing the wealth before it gets distributed to any of the beneficiaries. The current exemption from federal estate tax is $15M per person, so if a U.S. Citizen or resident’s individual estate does not exceed $15M, there is no estate tax.
